Walkit Route A29

Welcome to Walk it Leeds – this is sign A29

Walk it Leeds is a project aimed at making it easy to find your way around Leeds City Centre on foot.

This sign gives you clear, easy-to-read mapping of the local area. It shows you the main shopping areas in yellow, places to eat and drink in orange, and other places of interest in purple.

The map is known as ‘heads up’, which means the map is orientated to the direction you are looking at it, rather than having north at the top.

The sign is also solar powered, so the map should be backlit if it’s before 9pm and if it’s dark.

This sign was installed in October 2012 and the map was last updated in November 2011. If you spot any mistakes or damage, we’d be pleased to hear from you. Please email walkitleeds@leeds.gov.uk or call 0113 2474685.

You are at sign A29 on Briggate’s junction with Boar Lane. These are two of the first three streets in Leeds and together with Kirkgate, they formed the village of Leeds over 1,000 years ago, which was surrounded by farmland and based around Leeds Bridge. Boar Lane takes its name from Burh – the name for the fortified manor house which stood on Mill Hill. Today this area is dominated by retail, and in particular the vast Trinity Leeds shopping centre development, which is the only major shopping centre development currently ongoing in Western Europe – a real testament to the continued confidence in the Leeds economy.
