Over 120,000 Council Tax payers in Leeds currently receive a 25% single person reduction in their Council Tax.
Over the last few months, we have been carrying out checks to make sure that these discounts are correct.
These checks form part of the council’s measures to make sure that Council Tax bills are accurate and that our records are up to date.
Capita Local Government Services based in Bromley, Kent, have been appointed to carry out a comprehensive review. Capita have been working with a leading credit reference agency using up-to-the-minute, data-matching technology to identify where people are claiming discounts that they may not be entitled to.
Where it is identified that a single person discount no longer applies, the Council Tax payer is required to pay the money back.
We are keen however to ensure that genuine single occupancy residents continue to receive their single person discount entitlement, especially in these difficult trying economic times. If you live alone therefore, and are claiming single person discount, there is nothing to worry about.
If you received a single person discount review letter or reminder and have failed to complete and return it as requested, or failed to complete the review online, we have now cancelled the discount and issued an adjustment notice for the increased amount.
If you believe you should still be entitled to the Single Person Discount and wish to reclaim it, you can still complete the review online via the Single Person Discount Review form. You will need to provide your account reference number which is on your adjustment notice and the earlier review letters, where you will also find your unique identifier number which you will need to complete your review online.
Alternatively, you can complete the review form which accompanied your adjustment notice for the cancelled discount, and return the whole form without delay to:
