School governor support

The Leeds Governor Support Service works with schools, governors, local communities and voluntary organisations, with the aim of making sure that governing bodies are representative of the local communities served by schools.

The range of services we offer benefits individual governors, governing bodies, school staff and head teachers. These include:

  • Support, advice and information about governors’ responsibilities and effectiveness
  • A full clerking service to school governing bodies
  • An annual school governors’ training programme
  • Tailored courses for individual governing bodies
  • A termly newsletter and regular email updates

How can I get involved?

All over Leeds people like you are helping to run schools. You don’t need any particular expertise or special qualifications, as full training is given. You just need interest, enthusiasm and be able to commit about eight hours a term. Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible to be a parent governor

Anyone who is a parent / legal guardian (including carers), of a child in the school is eligible to stand for election. A person is disqualified from election or appointment as a parent governor of a school if they are an elected member of the LEA or if they are eligible to be a staff governor i.e. they work at the school for more than 500 hours in a school year (at the time of election or appointment). If a parent governor subsequently becomes a member of staff they can remain a parent governor until the end of their term of office.

Do parent governors have to resign when their child leaves school?

No. Parents can continue to be a parent governor until the end of the four year term of office. Any governor may resign at any time during a four year term of office.
