Leeds Homeshare

Leeds Homeshare matches someone who needs some help to live independently in their own home (Homeowner) with someone who has a housing need (Homesharer). In return for low cost accommodation the Homesharer provides 10 hours of support per week to the householder.

Support can include help with daily tasks such as cleaning, shopping, gardening and getting out and about.

Both the Homeowner and Homesharer pay a financial contribution to Leeds City Council to cover the cost of running the service.

If you have a spare room and could do with a bit of extra support Homeshare could be for you.

There are lots of benefits to Homeshare.

In addition to the 10 hours of support a week your sharer provides, Homeshare offers the reassurance of someone else at home at night. That bit of extra help can mean that you stay independent at home for longer. The support provided is flexible, the type of jobs that start to get harder as you get older, like taking out the bins or walking the dog.

As well as the companionship of someone else at home Homeshare can help you get out about and do more of the things you enjoy. Saving money by sharing bills is another plus.

Homeshare is also a great way to give back to your community.

How it works

We carefully match you with a suitable Homesharer based on your needs. It can take a few weeks to find the right Homesharer for you. This is because we will conduct thorough background checks to find a caring, helpful and compatible Homesharer to live in your home.

You’ll get to meet the Homesharer to see if you are compatible. If you’re both happy with the match, together you’ll agree what support (at least 10 hours a week) the Homesharer will give you.

The Homeshare team stay in touch and offer advice and support whenever you need it.

Please see our leaflet and FAQs for more information.

Are you happy to share 10 hours a week of your time? Homeshare works on the simple idea that you provide 10 hours of support to someone who needs help to live independently (the Homeowner), plus some friendly companionship, in exchange for affordable accommodation.

Homeshare offers comfortable accommodation in a family home whilst you develop new life skills and new relationships. Homeshare can be a very rewarding experience and a great addition to a CV.

How it works

As a Homesharer, the support you would provide could include caring for pets, cleaning, reading, cooking, shopping or gardening (no personal or nursing care is involved). It’s a flexible arrangement and you can tell us the type of support you can give.

We take time to get to know you so we can find a good match, you will have the opportunity to visit the Homeowner to see if the match feels compatible. Together with the Homeowner, you will agree the type of support you will provide. Leeds Homeshare will draw up this agreement with you both, which may also include contributing to household bills.

The Homeshare scheme stays in touch to offer advice and support whenever you need it.

Leeds Homeshare supports older people to stay in their homes (Homeowner) by matching them with people who are looking for somewhere to live (Homesharer). In return for affordable accommodation, the Homesharer will give the householder 10 hours of support per week. Support activities could include tasks like cooking, cleaning, shopping, gardening or walking the dog.

Some of the benefits of Homeshare include:

  • your family member is able to live in their home for longer
  • your family member will get some support and can live more independently
  • peace of mind knowing your family member is not living alone
  • you can spend more quality time with your family member

How it works

Homeshare is a great way for your family member to keep their independence. And you’ll have peace of mind knowing they are not alone and have companionship and help when they need it.

Leeds Homeshare organisation will carefully match your family member with a suitable, compatible Homesharer.

After conducting background (DBS) and reference checks on the Homesharer, the organisation will invite you and your family member or friend to meet the Homesharer.

If you’re all happy with the match, together you’ll agree the 10 hours of help your family member will receive. This will form the Homeshare agreement between your family member and the Homesharer.

The Homesharer will move into your family member’s home, giving them the support and companionship.

Leeds Homeshare will support the Homeshare arrangement.

Please see our leaflet and FAQs for more information.
