Family Information Service

You can find information about early years and childcare by contacting the family information service; a free information and advice service for families in Leeds.

We hold information on all registered and some non-registered childcare providers, childminders, nurseries (children’s centres, private, independent and voluntary sectors) out of school clubs, holiday playschemes, playgroups, and parent/toddler groups. We also provide the latest advice about finding good quality childcare as well as information to help towards the cost of childcare.

You can contact us to obtain lists of childcare providers nearest to your home or work postcode. You can receive this by post or email.

The Family Information Service website offers all of the above services including:- a postcode search to find the nearest childcare in your area, information on the free nursery education funding, career and training opportunities in childcare and information for childcare providers.

We also signpost to family advice and support services, and have a full range of information for families with disabled children. Our publications section also contains lots of help including our “A Brighter Future” magazine, which is published termly for families with disabled children.

When can my child start nursery?

Your child becomes eligible for a free place from the start of the school term following their third birthday and is entitled to it until school age.


For children born between 1st April to 31st August; they can start in September.
For children born between 1st September to 31st December; they can start in January.
For children born between 1st January to 31st March; they can start in April.
