Dewsbury Road Safety Scheme

Following a review of the injury accident collision data on Dewsbury Road between Hunslet Hall Road and Garnet Road it was identified that there have been 67 recorded injury accidents over the last 5 year study period. A significant number of these collisions have involved vulnerable road users including cyclists and pedestrians.

A road safety scheme has been developed to address these collisions which are being undertaken in two phases. The first phase, between Hunslet Hall Road and Burton Avenue, is currently being constructed and is expected to be completed in August 2017.

Many of the accidents along the second phase of the works – from Tunstall Road to Garnet Road – involve vehicles emerging from side roads, particularly when turning right across the main road. To address this Phase Two of the works consists mainly of the provision of a central reservation which will prevent this turning conflict. The works also include the provision of dedicated parking areas, bus stop works and resurfacing of all the footways along this length.

Existing street furniture will be reviewed with a view to improving pedestrian routes. The parking bays are proposed to provide a dedicated area for drivers and stop the instances of vehicles being parked on the footways that currently cause obstructions for pedestrians.

The design work has taken into consideration comments received from various neighbourhood and business boards, and also from previous consultations. The consultation drawing document (PDF 0.4MB) shows the proposed works, and any comments from residents and businesses will be welcomed and considered for the final scheme.
