Council tenants – a summary of some of your rights and responsibilities

As a tenant of Leeds City Council, you have a number of rights and responsibilities. These are all set out in your tenancy agreement booklet. Some of the rights only apply in certain circumstances. Your housing office will be able to give you more information.

Some of your rights include:

  • Buying your home
  • Exchanging your home with another tenant
  • If you die, passing on your tenancy to a family member who has lived with you for 12 months or more
  • Having repairs to your property

Some of your responsibilities include:

  • Paying your rent
  • Looking after your home and keeping it in good condition
  • Not causing nuisance or anti social behaviour in the neighbourhood

You may need permission from your housing office to do some of these things:

  • Carry out improvements 
  • Put up a shed or outbuilding
  • Keep a pet
  • Take in lodgers
