Cemeteries and Crematoria

Leeds City Council Bereavement Services maintain and hold the records for three Crematoria and twenty four Municipal Cemeteries in Leeds. These are:

Closed churchyards

We look after 22 closed churchyards. You can see a list of these by opening the document Closed churchyards below. The registers for closed churchyards should be available by contacting the minister of the church concerned or if the church is closed you may find the information on the West Yorkshire Archive Service website by following the link on this page.

War memorials

Frequently asked questions:

How can I find out where a relative is, who was buried or cremated in Leeds?

​Contact the Administration Office at Lawnswood.  Telephone 0113 395 7446 or by e mail at parks@leeds.gov.uk with;

  • the name of the cemetery or crematorium
  • the persons name, age and date of death

The records for the cemetery or crematorium will be checked and if the information is correct we should be able to let you know the grave number and section or where in the grounds cremated remains were strewn. (The reason that the cemetery or crematorium must be given is there are no computerised records prior to June 1987 and many of our records are not indexed).

How do I know what memorials are allowed within the crematoria grounds?

How can I buy a grave now to be used for burial later?

​Contact the Administration Office at Lawnswood. Telephone 0113 3957446 or by e mail at parks@leeds.gov.uk a member of staff will be able to inform you of what is involved, the cost and what paperwork you need to complete to purchase a grave.

How do I have a memorial fixed on my mothers/fathers grave?

​You need to speak to a memorial mason of your choice, the mason must be registered and licensed to work in Leeds City Council Municipal Cemeteries there is a list of approved monumental masons available by opening the document Memorial Mason Details or by Contacting the Administration Office at Lawnswood. Telephone 0113 3957446 or by email at parks@leeds.gov.uk a member of staff will be able to inform you what is involved.

Can I arrange a funeral myself?

Can I have cremated remains strewn or buried on or in a family grave?

How can I obtain a copy of a plan of a Leeds City Council Municipal Cemetery?
