The Arts and Regeneration Unit is part of the Arts and Events Service at Leeds City Council. You can download our team and departmental structure diagrams by clicking on the links on the right of this page. The team struture diagram contains individual contact details.
Arts and Regeneration aims to:
- Create opportunities for local people to take part in the cultural life of the city
- Support local artists and arts organisations working in communities
- Promote partnership working within the arts and cultural sector
The work we do can be split into the following areas:
Arts Development
Our Arts Development Officers provide support and guidance to organisations working with the arts in communities. This includes administering the arts@leeds Grant Scheme, which offers financial support to non-profit making organisations involved in arts and cultural activities in the community, and the Black History Month Grant scheme.
Also now available is the quarterly arts@leeds e-newsletter, which can be downloaded from this page. It contains useful arts sector updates and information for arts organisations. If you would like to receive the newsletter regularly on email, please send your details to arts@leeds.gov.uk
Arts Projects and Cultural Initiatives
As well as supporting and partnering arts organisations to develop work, the Arts & Regeneration Unit organises and coordinates a wide range of its own arts projects and annual events.
Creative activity has a crucial role to play in social, cultural and urban regeneration. Leeds City Council aims to increase residents' participation in the cultural life of the city and to raise young people's aspirations. The range of activities offered by Arts and Regeneration address these specific local needs. We provide new opportunities where opportunities are few and reach brand new audiences across the city through an annual calendar of arts projects and cultural events, including Get Creative, Holocaust Memorial Day, the Youth Music Mentoring scheme and Light Night.
Breeze International Youth Festival
Our Breeze Officers work on a number of projects that offer young people the chance to get involved in a range of arts and cultural activities that they might not otherwise have access to. The work of the Breeze Team is focused around the Breeze promise, unique to Leeds, that every young person should have:
- Somewhere to go
- Something to do
- Someone to talk to
The Breeze International Youth Festival (BIYF) is an annual festival in June for all local young people aged 19 and under, which supports and promotes other year-round projects and opportunities for young people, including the Breezereads literacy and reading scheme and Sessions @ The Gallery, a monthly art club for teenagers.
Our Partners
We would like to acknowledge and thank our partners for helping us to deliver such a valuable and broad range of opportunities to the people of Leeds. You can find links to many of the organisations that we we work with and provide support and funding to on the right hand side of this page.
We are always looking for new ways to encourage participation in the arts and promote partnership working so if you have an idea, please talk to us. When it comes to the arts in Leeds, we can support you to make things happen.
