Record recycling rate reaps rewards

All time high recycling records set last year are being smashed according to the latest figures from Leeds City Council.

The 40% barrier was first broken in April 2011 with recycling rates in May 2012 reaching 44% and creeping up to nearly 45% in June 2012.

The overall recycling rate for the year so far is 43% – 1.9% up on the same period last year. If the upward trend continues, residents and the council will be well on the way to reaching recycling rates of 55% by 2016.

Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for the environment, said:

“We were delighted to achieve such great recycling rates last summer and to be improving on these month by month this summer is tremendous.

“We set ourselves tough targets as we know the financial and economic benefits to recycling.

“With more people recycling and a range of ways to recycle across the city linked to the delivery of a good quality service, I hope the figures continue to rise.

“We collect over two million bins a month, and we are focusing on delivering a consistent, effective and efficient service.

“We are constantly working to make improvements to the service, with plans to roll out more brown bins, increase the number of households with food waste collections and implement fortnightly collections of green bins across the city.”
