Party in the Park rocks Temple Newsam

The UK’s biggest annual free outdoor pop event went down a storm with 70,000 lucky Leeds residents today.

Party in the Park, organised by Leeds City Council and 96.3 Radio Aire, brought a host of chart topping acts to Temple Newsam Park in Leeds.

The annual party was able to go ahead despite the recent unseasonable weather which saw other major events cancelled, thanks to the hard work and commitment from everyone involved to get the site ready in time.

Some of the biggest acts from the UK and beyond performed in the sunshine today to 70,000 lucky ticket holders who were successful in the ballot for tickets held last month.

The capacity crowd enjoyed performances from 16 of the country’s most popular pop acts including headline act Tulisa and One Direction. The chart-topping band, who are currently making waves in America, appeared alongside fellow X Factor stars Little Mix and Marcus Collins, as well as past winner Alexandra Burke.

The energetic duo, Rich Williams and Naomi Kent from Radio Aire Breakfast, hosted the whole event, with a surprise appearance from X-Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary who was a huge hit with the crowds.

Party in the Park also gave one up-coming local singer the opportunity to perform to the biggest audience of her life. The Voice contestant Frances Wood from Wakefield was delighted to perform in front of the packed Leeds crowd.

Councillor Adam Ogilvie, Leeds City Council’s executive member responsible for leisure services said:
“This year’s Party in the Park has been another phenomenal success. And the sun even came out to make our annual pop extravaganza even more special.

“The team at Leeds City Council and Radio Aire have been working around the clock to get the park ready despite the recent terrible weather to make sure that Leeds got to enjoy the party we promised, against all the odds.

“We had such a fantastic line-up again this year making Party in the Park the not to be missed event at Temple Newsam.”

Euan McMorrow, Programme Director for Radio Aire said;
“The people of Leeds should be proud about how hard they partied today! It’s the biggest crowd many of these artists have ever played to. Most of them were nervous beforehand, but the fantastic reception they got from Leeds soon put them at ease.

“Everyone at Radio Aire is so honoured to work with the council on creating this amazing, and now legendary, massive summer party for Leeds, the city we live in and love!”

Rich Williams from Radio Breakfast said:
“It’s simply amazing that Radio Aire are able to bring some of the biggest acts on the planet to everyone’s back garden right here in Leeds. It just goes to show how much the stars value the audience in Leeds and if the noise that was made when One Direction stepped onto the stage was anything to go by, they made the right decision by partying with us in our city!”

The boys from One Direction had already been sampling the great nightlife Leeds has to offer. Liam said they had been out in Leeds last night and it was good fun. Both Louis and Zayn were pleased to be back in Yorkshire, which prompted the boys to start a ‘Yorkshire’ chant on stage.

After performing his set, Marcus Collins said Party in the Park had been ‘amazing’ and the atmosphere was really buzzing. Marcus also admitted to being partial to the Leeds nightlife. It was Taio Cruz’s first time in Leeds but he said his first impressions of the city were ‘great’.
