Bird Brains – Fabulous Flyers
Site: Lotherton Hall
Key stages:
KS1, KS2
Subject areas:
Science, Literacy
This workshop is led by museums staff.
What's involved?
Meet Archie – he’s an Opterix, our Dino-Bird glove puppet. Archie will introduces the science of powered flight and gliding, and show how close to dinosaurs our modern birds really are!
During this two-hour workshop, children will meet Archie and gain a comprehensive introduction to the world of powered flight, and the development of birds from dinosaurs. The session focuses on the topics of adaptation, evolution and variation and classification, as Archie links ancient species to those still around today.
Workshop includes a handling session with bird and animal skulls, bones and feathers and is supported by the Carnival of Colour Colouring Book. The book includes line drawings of 12 exotic birds from our collection for your children to colour in at school or at the Bird Garden, with information about each and a world map to plot where they come from.
For more information, please contact the Learning and Access Officer on 0113 2813259.
Want to know even more about evolution and how modern species developed? Have a look at our workshops at the Discovery Centre - we can deliver them as outreach too!
