Bringing the Ancient Greeks to Life: How do we know about the Ancient Greeks?
Site: City Museum
Key stages:
KS2
Subject areas:
History
This workshop is led by museums staff.
What's involved?
During this two-hour workshop, pupils will;
- Look at Ancient Greek objects at Leeds City Museum
- Identify facts that can be deduced about the Ancient Greeks by looking at the images on Greek pottery
- Design a Greek pot or plate showing an important aspect of their life
- Look closely at Greek coins and learn how the Ancient Greeks made coins
- Understand what archaeologists do and how they uncover information about the past by looking at objects
This workshop examines how archaeological evidence can help us to learn about the Ancient Greeks.
After a brief introduction to the topic, during which time the workshop facilitator will ascertain how much knowledge the pupils have, the key question will be set: How do we know so much about the ancient Greeks? We will use the Ancient Worlds gallery to find some answers to this question.
Back in the Learning Space, still in three groups the pupils will look at three themes - coins, mystery objects and pottery; and will do an activity relating to each theme. The coin activity will involve looking at real and replica coins, learning about how Greek coins were made and doing coin rubbings. In the pottery activity the pupils will look at real and replica pots and design their own pot or decorate a paper plate. Finally, the pupils will look at real and replica mystery items and investigate them, trying to discover what they were used for in Ancient Greece.
