 Work Experience for secondary schools

Ever wondered who actually opens the doors to our museums?
Or what has to happen to get to that point each morning?
Who runs the shops, makes the ‘here’s one I did earlier’ for the family activities, and produces the leaflets and marketing?
What kind of skills do you need to do all that?

Work experience with Leeds Museums and Galleries is your chance to find out and gain transferable skills that will help you for the future!

Babington Group Placements

We are currently offering high quality, supported work experience placements to develop transferable skills in customer service and public engagement, hospitality, retail and administration. (Click on the Documents section on the left-hand side of the page for more information.)

 • Teamworking skills – Each site operates as a team, and all the sites operate as a service. It needs everyone to pull together to make the service work.

• Communication skills – Museums are all about communication - from the objects we display, to our promotional materials, to our schools and family workshops and conversations with general visitors. Communication and presentation skills are key in many areas of work.

• Customer focus - We work with a range of people from Leeds and beyond. We aim to listen, respond and treat everyone with respect through our displays, programmes and sites.

• Confidence building – Didn’t think you could talk to groups of people? Or create a children’s trail? We will support you to build your overall confidence in yourself.

• Problem solving, flexibility and building initiative – situations can change quickly, and we can help support you to build your problem solving skills and develop the confidence to use your initiative.

• Where do you want a placement?
Have a look through the website and work out which two sites you might enjoy working at and can travel to, then call your first choice.

• When should you arrange it?
We get booked up really quickly for placements, so the earlier you contact us the more likely you are to get a place. We operate a first come, first served basis. Most sites can only take a maximum of two students each week.

• How to get in touch?
If someone else calls us on your behalf, we will ask you to call back before we discuss placements. We want to see that you are committed.

• What happens next?
We may ask to meet you before your placement. This is just to find out what you want and work out how we can help you achieve it.

Museum careers advice:
If you don’t manage to get a placement, then we will be running a museum careers day in the summer term. The next one is planned for Thursday 7 July 2016 at Leeds City Museum. Contact Leeds City Museum for more details.

(Please note: Leeds Discovery Centre does not host secondary school work experience placements.)
