The Leeds Playbills site enables you to search 5000 playbills online. Created from the Local and Family History Library's playbill collections, it provides a unique insight into theatre life in Leeds between 1781 and the 1990s.  

Playbills

  • From existing Leeds Theatres e.g. the City Varieties, the Grand and the Playhouse
  • From theatres which now no longer exist e.g. The Theatre on Hunslet Lane, the Empire, the Princess and the Theatre Royal. 

Circus bills

  • From Pablo Fanque's Circus 
  • From many circuses that performed off Boar Lane.

How can I search the site

  • By theatre
  • By date
  • By act or actor's name
  • By  keyword, phrase

Viewing the playbills

  • Results show the playbill as a small image
  • Click the image to enlarge and for a full description 
  •  An enlarged form shows all the detail on the playbill.
  • Browse the changing playbill gallery to get a flavour of the site.

You can now purchase original size colour copies of the playbills in the gallery, at prices ranging from £20 - £50.

The Leeds Playbill site received funding from the New Opportunities Fund, now the Big Lottery, and was developed as part of the Leodis website.
