Volunteering

The Parks and Countryside service is very grateful for the support of the hundreds of volunteers who work with us every year.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are three main types of volunteer opportunities in parks and countryside:

  • Longer term volunteer roles for individuals, including work placements for over 18s
  • Volunteer groups that are affiliated to particular sites or service areas, such as ‘Friends of’ Roundhay Park or Leeds Wildlife Volunteers.
  • Outside organisations that want to volunteer on a one off or infrequent basis. This can include corporate groups on team building days.

The kinds of work that volunteers do for the parks and countryside service varies greatly. Some examples include:

  • Practical work to improve green spaces for people and wildlife including gardening, nature conservation and maintaining site infrastructure such as paths and fences
  • Fundraising for site improvements
  • Organising community events
  • Being the ‘eyes and ears’ of a site
  • Marketing
  • Surveying wildlife
  • Running community cafes in parks

You can find out more by reading the leaflets in the Documents section of the page or check out the further information section below.

Set up your own group

If you are interested in caring for your local site and it doesn’t have a Friends of group already, you could set up your own. To find out how to go about doing that, see the download entitled 'How to start Friends of groups' in the Documents section of this page.

You can also contact us to get support from the Parks and Countryside Service.

Weekly or regular volunteering

If you would like to volunteer for the parks and countryside service regularly during the week. We have the following opportunities available at present or you could join a volunteer group.

Horticultural volunteers required on sites across the city

Work placements with the ranger service available

Administration volunteers

Outdoor education volunteers (seasonal)

All such long term volunteer positions are subject to an informal interview process to ascertain suitability to do the role.

If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities or for more information, contact the Ranger Service on 0113 3367548 or 0113 3367549 or countrysiderangers@leeds.gov.uk
