Leeds in Bloom Design a Flowerbed Competition

Single Image Display

Each spring we ask local children to dream up designs for flowerbeds in prominent locations in Leeds City Centre.  Winning designs are translated into planting schemes and the people of Leeds see them bloom over the summer months.

Winner receive individual prizes plus horticultural gift vouchers for their school at an award ceremony with the Lord Mayor of Leeds.

Promoted by our Parks and Countryside Service in association with Leeds Floral Initiative and Evans Property Group Leeds, this popular competition aims to encourage young people to be more aware of their environment and the horticultural features within it.

Entry forms and further details are available in the documents section.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter the design a flowerbed competition?

The Leeds in Bloom Design a Flowerbed Competition is open to all children in Leeds aged 4-14. The competition opens each September and closes in February. Look out for posters in Libraries and information packs sent to schools.

What does it involve?

  • Anyone can enter this popular competition between the ages of 4 to 14.
  • Because the winning design will be planted out using real flowers we have to specify which colours you can use. All designs should only use the following colours: red, pink, purple, orange, gold, silver, shades of blue, white, yellow, salmon, peach and cream
  • Entries should be imaginative and original. The idea is to design a pattern or collage rather than a garden scene or picture. Remember the designs have to be translated into a planting scheme.
  • Individual entries only: no shared or group designs allowed.
  • Each design must be no larger than A3 and should be clearly labelled with the title of your design, your full name, age and your school's name, address and telephone number.
  • The judges' decision is final. No correspondence concerning the competition will be entered into.
  • All entries will be returned to their owners after the competition.  The Floral Initiative reserves the right to display or reproduce any of the designs without seeking the individual’s permission.
