Plans for refurbishment gain approval

The entrance to Kirkgate Market

This afternoon, 2 April 2014, at its Executive Board meeting, the Council gave the thumbs-up to the design for the new look market, which was released to the public and media last week.  They also gave official permission to spend the £12.3m needed to complete the project, and also to a proposal to offer support to relocating tenants in the form of a combination of grant and interest free loan to offset the cost of moving.

The next step is to submit a full planning application for approval by the Council’s Plans Panel, and also to ask English Heritage to give Listed Building Consent as the project encompasses a Grade 1 listed building.

The refurbishment should be complete by 2016 to coincide with the completion of the new John Lewis store and Victoria Gate shopping centre, both to be built next to the market.
