Market Management Board elections

Nominations for trader representatives to sit on Kirkgate Market’s new management board are now open.

The council is looking for two indoor market traders and one outdoor market trader to represent all traders on the board.

The traders will join six councillors on the new management board who together will recruit up to three independent expert advisers.

Traders have until 11 July to nominate themselves or a fellow trader who are as passionate about the future and success of the market as the council.

The election itself will take place between 23 July and 11 August.

The entire process is being run by UK Engage, independent election experts.

The management board will be the key forum to debate market issues and advise the council on the day-to-day operation of Kirkgate Market.

The forum will have an important role to play in supporting traders in the coming years as the market goes through a £12.3 million refurbishment.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive member for transport and economy, said:

“The new board will play an instrumental part in helping to steer the future of the market. It’s vital that traders are represented on the new board so I’d urge traders to nominate themselves or a colleague and get behind their preferred candidate when voting opens.”

UK Engage Services Director, Steve Power, said:

“The election is being run to establish the members of the board that will have responsibility for the future management arrangements of Kirkgate Market for the next three years. UK Engage is extremely pleased to work with Kirkgate Market to run the election, we will act as Scrutineer and Returning Officer and deliver the final result.”
