Love your local market

Love Your Local Market (LYLM) is a celebration of our market culture here in the UK that happens over a fortnight in May.

It all started in 2012 amidst growing alarm for the future of our nations High Streets when the idea of a National Market Day was proposed alongside the governments High Street Review.  With markets held on so many days throughout the month however, loads would have been left out, which was when Love Your Local Market fortnight was born.

At Leeds Kirkgate Market we went all out this year for LYLM. We offered people the opportunity to trader for the day for just £10. We ran an extended World Feast Event on Briggate and a Library ‘Story Time and Activity’ event at Kirkgate Market. We also ran a hugely successful Chocolatier Event which brought the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress to the market as well as over 120 children to make chocolate with a professional chocolatier.

The event was really well received and everyone had lots of fun. During the event we took some video footage and submitted it to www.loveyourlocalmarket.org.uk who have incorporated it into their own wonderful video showcasing many of the LYLM events from this year.

So, grab yourself a coffee, take a seat, click on the link below and enjoy some of the great celebrations of markets throughout the UK.
