Dom Charkin, Project Manager at evolve, Zest - Health for Life, gave us an insight in to their work on Leeds Let's Change in the market ... "Situated right in the heart of Leeds Kirkgate Market is the Leeds Let’s Change Health Point; a place where shoppers can drop in to escape the hustle and bustle of the market and pick up information about their health and well-being.

Leeds Let’s Change offers an annual programme of health awareness activity, offering people the opportunity to come in and find out more information about their health and well-being. There is an array of information available from smoking cessation to diabetes as well as two iPads available for people to use to refer themselves to city wide health services, including signing up for free gym sessions and swims at many of the cities leisure centres.

We have recently run two Winter Warmth awareness days. Helping to refer people onto services that offer free thermal efficiency measures for cold homes, as well as how to save money on fuel bills. As the Leeds Let’s Change Centre is next to Jamie’s Ministry of Food we also prepared and gave out tasty, healthy warming tasters & recipes to people dropping in. Using one of our trained volunteers we also offered free 15 minute hand massages to people, which were a big hit.

In addition to the smoking cessation, weight management and sexual health services that already regularly use the centre to help people make changes to their lives. The volunteers that run the centre are planning a programme of activity throughout the year including salt awareness, sessions on COPD and diabetes and much more.

So if you are passing the centre and someone offers you a warming soup taster or sample of veg chilli; Why not stop and come in as you never know what you might find out!

Thanks to the Zest team for doing a great job keeping Leeds healthy.
