The Warming House
Directly to the north of the Meat Kitchen lay an open courtyard, beyond which stood the Warming House (22) or calefactorium. Here a fire was provided for the monks to come and warm themselves during the cold winter months, access being through a doorway leading directly from the Cloister.
The large block of masonry in the north cast corner of this room is the base of a thirteenth century staircase which led from the corner of the Cloister up to the first floor dorter to the east. The Abbey's records would be stored in the warm, dry and secure muniment room over the warming house.
