The Tower

The Tower

The Tower The original twelfth century tower only rose to the height of the steeply sloping tiled roofs of the church, but between 1509 and 1527, when William Marshall was abbot, it was greatly enlarged by the addition of the new belfry which still bears his initials on shield shaped plaques on the corner buttresses.

The weight of this extension eventually led to the collapse of the north west corner of the tower, which fell on January 27th, 1779.
