The South Alley

The South Alley

Passing along the south side of the Cloister, the outline of the first entrance to the Warming House can be seen at the side of the die pointed day-stair door, the blocked round-headed doorway close by providing access to an enlarged Warming House from the late twelfth century.

The four fine thirteenth century arched recesses cut into the south wall are all that remain of an eight-arched laver, a long wash-basin used by the monks before entering the next pair of doors into the misericord and the Refectory. The two succeeding doors led into the Kitchen, while the final pair passed into the Brew-house through the thirteenth century blocking of the great arched entry into the lay-brothers' yard.
