Dormitory Undercroft

Dormitory UndercroftPassing the Chapter House (9), the original eastern range of buildings can be seen continuing to the south (10 13), its upper floor forming the monks' dorter or dormitory, while most of the ground floor probably formed a workroom for monks. This room ( 13), with its vaulted roof supported on four massive cylindrical columns, survived intact until 1825, when almost the whole structure collapsed.

In the late thirteenth century the open area to the east of the undercroft was, enclosed within a high walled passage which led from the Cloister to the Infirmary and then turning at right angles, continued down to the Abbot's Lodging (19). Two hundred years later a timber framed first floor was built above this passage to create both a new library and a long gallery.
