BELLE ISLE PLANTATIONS

Description : Planted in the late 1980s and early 1990s on a re-claimed landfill and former mineral extraction site (Middleton Broom Colliery). These young plantations are maturing to provide a potentially high quality area of Public Open Space. They provide a valued natural backdrop to the Middleton Railway (the world's oldest steam railway) and an extension to the adjacent Ancient Semi-natural Woodlands of Middleton Wood.
