Description :
This woodland is sited on both sides of the Leeds Outer Ring Road adjacent to the Airedale
and Wharfedale College, although only part of the woodland to the east of the Ring Road is in
ownership of the Council.
As the road descends into a steep valley towards Bradford, the woodland slopes towards Horsforth
Newlaithes Junior School and the River Aire runs adjacent. The western edge of the woodland is
bordered by old dry stone walling and agricultural fields.
It is possible that due to its steep landscape, this ancient semi-natural woodland has survived.
Typically most woodlands of this age remain in their natural state, as cultivation for agriculture
is difficult on this type of terrain.
The woodland is bisected by the Leeds Outer Ring Road and it provides high amenity and wildlife value
for this busy transport corridor.
The majority of the canopy tree species within the woodland are
oak,
sycamore and
alder, with a young
oak and sycamore
understorey.
Access and facilities :
There are no official public rights of way through this woodland but access can be gained from
the Leeds Outer Ring Road approximately ½ km south of Airedale and Wharfedale College.
