Description :
This site, known as "The Fall" since at least the early 1700s, lies on the north
facing side of a shallow valley, immediately north-east of the village of East Ardsley.
The present woodland, plus an extensive area of grassland, was developed on the sites
of three former heavy industries (coal mining, steel works and railway sidings) in the
mid 1970s.
This young woodland (consisting of mixed broadleaves and a small compartment of
broadleaves and conifers) received its first
thinning
in 1997, the aim being to improve the health of individual trees, the structural
diversity of the woodland and the developing natural habitats.
Following the thinnings operation a new
bridleway
was constructed through woodlands from Moor Knoll Lane to Lingwell Nook, where it
joins an existing bridleway to create a three mile circuit. In addition a network of
tracks and trails occur throughout, allowing access to all parts of the woodland.
Access and facilities :
Footpath
and bridleway access from Moor Knoll Lane and Lingwell Nook. Footpath access is from
Falls Lane.
