Description :
The plantation affords an attractive backdrop to this pretty village and
provides valuable shelter for wildlife in this high, exposed area of the
city.
Thinning took place in 1997 to improve the robustness and structure
of the woodland.
The majority of the canopy species are
beech,
sweet chestnut,
larch,
sycamore,
ash and
oak
A number of bird and
bat boxes have been
erected to assist with wildlife habitats, with the help of children from the local school.
The Hawksworth Residents' Association has, for a number of years, been
actively involved in the management of this woodland. Through the
partnerships between themselves and the Parks and Countryside Division
of Leeds City Council, the wishes of local people combined with the
needs of the trees, wildlife and future potential of the area can be met.
Access and facilities :
Pedestrian access is through Hawksworth Lane and Main Street, Hawksworth
Village. There are a number of unmarked paths through the wood.
