Description :
This is a large Edwardian Country Estate (78 hectares) comprising Hall and Formal
Gardens, Bird Garden, Deer Park and extensive mixed woodlands (20 hectares),
supporting rich habitats for a large variety of flora and fauna.
Where safe and practical, many
Veteran Trees
have been retained on the estate in recognition of their high nature conservation and
cultural value. A programme of formal tree planting is currently well under way.
This will ensure a thriving and healthy tree population for future generations to
enjoy.
Access and facilities : This Leeds City Council
owned country estate receives some 750,000 visitors per year and offers a wide range
of visitor attractions.
These include
Lotherton Hall itself, which is now a fine
museum, the Bird Garden, which boasts an extensive collection of exotic birds from
around the world and the Deer Park, with its collection of red deer. An extensive
network of paths and trails (including the estate Boundary Trail) allow the visitor
to explore the estate and the surrounding wider countryside.
A Leeds City Council Countryside Ranger is based permanently at Lotherton, who offers
an extensive environmental package to schools and community groups including the
popular "Running Fox Summer Lodge" Native American experience. The Countryside
Ranger would like to invite interested members of the public to become Voluntary
Rangers and assist in a wide variety of countryside management projects. In addition,
a wide range of public events are held on the estate each year.
