Description :
These woodlands provide a much needed amenity backdrop to the surrounding
built up residential estate.
Great Swarcliffe Wood is surrounded on all sides by housing and high rises
and acts as a 'green screen' for all of the neighbouring properties.
Although this is a relatively small wood, it is possible to stand in the
centre and not see the surrounding buildings, giving the feeling of nature
in a very urban environment.
The predominant tree species within is
sycamore,
with a generous amount of healthy sycamore
natural regeneration,
and the wood also supports
oak and
rowan with a predominant
hawthorn
understorey.
The main tree species within Little Swarcliffe are Sycamore, Oak,
ash,
elm
and
lime.
There are no thoroughfares at present within this woodland
however, it does provide a valuable visual amenity resource to the area.
Access and facilities :
Pedestrian access points are from Swarcliffe Avenue, Eastwood Gardens,
Swarcliffe Drive and Eastwood Drive (Great Swarcliffe) and Swarcliffe
Drive (Little Swarcliffe). There are numerous desire lines within Great
Swarcliffe (one within Little Swarcliffe) although there are no official
Public Rights of Way.
