Description :
This is a mixed broadleaf plantation adjoining Skelton Lane, part of Whinmoor housing estate and playing
field. It forms an important landscape feature, is a recreational resource for local residents and it
contributes to the wildlife habitat of the area, being part of a group of three woodlands linked by
hedgerows, ditches and field trees.
A number of Leeds Tree Wardens and local volunteers have formed a conservation group, called The Skelton
Woods Environment Group (SWEG) which liaise and consult with the officers from Leisure Services.
The members meet regularly to devise management plans to suit their local needs and they play a very active
role in the conservation of Skelton Woods. Projects carried out by SWEG include path building, tree and
hedge planting, litter picking and educational work with schools and guides.
It is believed that the wood was originally planted as a late Victorian/early Edwardian game covert
(particularly for pheasant) and for timber, and it contains a wide variety of mature and newly planted native
and exotic tree species.
Access and facilities :
Access is off Skelton Lane and Naburn Approach and there is a
permissive footpath for pedestrians.
