Description :
A mature woodland consisting of a number of broadleaved species including
oak,
birch,
alder and
beech.
The woodland was restocked in 1999 with oak and alder in order to achieve a two
storey structure.
Adjacent to the mature woodland, is a younger plantation dating from 1985 with
wild cherry,
sweet chestnut and
scots pine.
This was thinned in 1999 with the aim of growing high quality cherry
timber with an
understorey of
sweet chestnut. This sweet chestnut will be managed as coppice, which can
be cropped on a rotation of 12-16 years, yielding small diameter
poles for a variety of uses.
This woodland provides substantial amenity landscape and shelter value to the Parks and Countryside Department
of Leeds City Council. It is also a significant feature in a predominantly urban fringe landscape, along a
major transport corridor through Leeds.
Being a valuable resource for the Council and the community, this woodland is utilised for training and
education events for Leeds City Council staff, community groups, tree wardens and other volunteers.
