Description : This is a mature, broadleaved woodland surrounding a secluded housing development. As it can be seen from many vantage points, this woodland is a major landscape feature and it contributes to giving the area a rural feel. Blackwood is one of a string of woods linking larger areas of open space.

The area is widely used as a recreational resource by local residents and has a wide variety of wildlife species within, including foxes, great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, great tits, tree creepers and long tails.

Beech, oak and sycamore are the dominant canopy species within the woodland, complimented with sycamore and beech natural regeneration and mixed new plantings.

Access and facilities : Pedestrian access is via Darkwood Way off Shadwell Lane, Darkwood Close off of Shadwell Lane and Hodgson Avenue off the Moortown Ring Road. There are many desire lines throughout the woodland.
