This website gives background information to all Leeds City Council owned woodlands, all of which have
full public access. If you wish to visit a privately owned woodland, remember to check with the owner
first. The Royal Forestry Society is encouraging its members to support educational activities in their
woods. A new website will soon be available to help schools locate private woodlands that are supporting
the education initiative. This will have a direct link with the Forest of Leeds website.
TREE SEED GATHERING AND AUTUMN TREES DAY LEEDS PRIMARY SCHOOLS
This autumn, Leeds City Council's Forestry Section, in partnership with the British Trust for
Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), will be holding four tree seed gathering events for primary schools
in the Leeds area. Our aim is to involve youngsters in the collection of seed from local trees so that
they can grow their own tree seedlings and plant them back into the local landscape (including school
grounds) early in the new millennium.
Trees planted from this seed will have real cultural and historical significance for the schools involved
and the local communities who will benefit from the trees as they mature.
Each event will involve three schools in a three hour package of activities :
- Seed Collection Walk - 11/2 hours
- Seed Preparation Workshop - 45 mins
- "Flying Slug Tree Workshop"- 45 mins
The Seed Collection Walk will be led by a Forester, Countryside Ranger or a BTCV staff member.
As well as collecting viable seed from selected and identified trees, there will be an opportunity
to explain the processes involved in woodland conservation management.
Following this, children and staff will learn how to prepare their collected tree seed for sowing and be
told exactly how to care for the young seedlings right up to the time of planting.
The "Flying Slug Tree Workshop" will be run by staff from BTCV's Skelton Grange Environment Centre and
offers a range of educational games and activities designed to aid understanding of trees and woodlands
and how they interact with their ecosystems.
There is no charge and all materials required for the collecting and transporting seed, plus sowing
will be provided for schools to take back with them. In addition a selection of literature giving step
by step guidelines will be available for schools to take away.
Schools will be chosen on a first come first served basis, and will be asked to send one class of junior
aged children (preferably Y5 or Y6). The day will include three overlapping three hour sessions :
- 9.00 am. - 12 noon
- 10.30 a.m. - 1.30pm
- 12 noon - 3.00pm
Time tabling will be finalised once the three schools are known.
The four events will take place at the following locations :
- Oulton Golf Course - Monday 14th October
- Temple Newsam Estate - Friday 18th October
- Roundhay Park - Monday 28th October
- Chevin Forest Park - Thursday 7th November
