Roads and flooded drains

Gullies and manholes

Gullies are usually found at the edge of a road, covered by a metal grid. Let us know if these are blocked and flooded or at risk of flooding.

Damaged gullies or manhole covers

Tell us if a gully or manhole cover is loose, noisy, damaged, sunken or missing.       

Watercourse flooding (brooks, streams, culverts and becks)

Tell us if a watercourse is flooded. This is where water flows through a channel or pipe and includes brooks or streams. These are not part of a main river.      

We can also make landowners remove obstructions from watercourses on their land that may cause flooding.

Water coming up through the ground

Let us know if water rises up through the ground (groundwater flooding).

Other flooding and who to report to

River floods

Call the Environment Agency to report:                                        

  • flooding from a main river, such as the river Aire or the river Wharfe
  • a blockage, such as a fallen tree
  • collapsed or damaged river bank
  • unusual changes in river flow

Public sewers and burst water mains

Contact Yorkshire Water to report:                                        

  • blocked sewers

Private drains

Floods caused by private drains are the responsibility of the property owner.             

You can pay to get help or advice from drainage contractors or Yorkshire Water external link.             

Drains on a neighbouring property

Let us know if raw sewage from a neighbours drain is leaking on to a public footpath.

Water in cellars

Property owners are responsible for flooding or water coming into cellars.             

Floodwater run off

Contact the land owner for flood water coming from higher land or for gardens that are water logged.
