Leeds Homes

To find a new home you have to be a member of Leeds Homes. Download a copy from the Leeds Homes website: www.leedshomes.org.uk or visit your local housing office or One Stop Centre.

You can visit the Leeds Homes website at local libraries and computers in housing offices.

Once you are registered, we may write to you from time to time to check your details are correct. Anyone over 16 can apply to be on the register, but generally you will not be offered a home until you are at least 18 unless there is a support network in place.

You must keep us informed of any changes in your circumstances that may affect your eligibility. To do this, download and complete the form on the Leeds Homes website or complete their online form.

The Housing Act 1996 prevents Local Authorities from offering a property to some people because of their immigration status.  Please ask for advice if you think this may apply to you.

How long will I have to wait for a property?

We consider people by priority first for the majority of property offers. When you register with Leeds Homes they will assess your housing needs and your application will be placed in one of the following bands:

band A - households who have a very urgent need to be rehoused
band B - households who have a moderately urgent need to be rehoused
band C – all other households including those with a low or no housing need

When deciding which band you should be in they will investigate your medical needs, housing conditions, whether you are homeless or any other reason that you need to be rehoused.  You will then be told which band your application is in.

How long will I remain in Band A or Band B?
You will remain in Band A or Band B for 120 days.  We will write to you to let you know when your priority is due to expire.

Can my priority award be extended?
Yes, extension requests should be made to the local Housing Office where your registration form is held. All extension requests are considered on an individual basis.  For more information visit your local Housing Office

What happens when I am offered a property?

If you decide to take the home, we will explain the tenancy conditions to you and ask you to sign an agreement accepting them. This will include paying your rent regularly, keeping your property in good condition and not causing a nuisance or danger to other people.

Before you move into your new home we will make sure it is safe, secure and that services are working. Our priority is to provide you with a safe living environment.

Once you have signed the tenancy agreement, we will cancel your housing registration. You can if you wish register a new application should you wish to move again in the future

You can refuse the property if it is not suitable. Simply tell the housing office straight away. They will withdraw the offer and you can carry on bidding for other properties.

However, if you have a priority, you may lose your priority award if the offer of property was suitable for you.  This will be discussed with you during or after the viewing. If you are unsure, simply ask your housing office for advice, or whoever awarded you the priority.
