Making Leeds City Centre More Child Friendly

Over the last few months, Child Friendly Leeds has been asking children and young people from 4 – 18 years (25 with additional needs) to share their great ideas for making Leeds city centre more child and family friendly, via a city wide arts and design competition. We asked entrants to tell us about their low cost or free ideas that would help make the city centre more welcoming for children and young people around five themes: safety, transport, people, activities/events and physical environment.

The response from young people was overwhelming and we received some incredible ideas that will form a valuable resource that we can share with interested people in Leeds. Our judging panel, consisting of adults and Leeds Youth Council members, chose ten winning entries from the 354 that we received.

All ten winners have been invited to attend our Child Friendly Leeds City Centre Business Ambassador event on 3 July. The young people will take part in a workshop, share their competition ideas with businesses and organisations from across Leeds and enjoy afternoon tea in the Queens Hotel. All of the entries will be on display at the event and we hope to display them publically in the near future.

Whilst there is currently an impressive offer for adults, we want to improve and make the city centre more inclusive for children, young people and families. Feedback from this event will then be used to develop high impact projects for the city centre which will hopefully make some of the ideas a reality.

Leeds City Centre: Parent and Carer Ideas and Feedback

Leeds wants to be the best city for children and young people to grow up in and we want to know what YOU would like to see in the city centre to help make this a reality!

We would like to give parents and carers of children in Leeds, the opportunity to tell us what you and your children like about the city centre and what you think would make it a better place for children and families to enjoy. We are going to share your feedback and ideas with our child friendly Leeds ambassadors and key partners in the city centre at an event in July. Your ideas and suggestions will be presented and discussed alongside those from children and young people and we look forward to sharing with you on the child friendly Leeds website the actions that are agreed.

This questionnaire is open to all parents and carers of children under 18 (under 25 with additional needs). You can print out the questionnaire and post it to: PO Box 837, Child friendly Leeds, Children and Families, Leeds, LS1 9PZ or send via email to childfriendlyleeds@leeds.gov.uk by Friday 9th June 2017.

To say thanks to you for sharing your feedback, we will be entering participants into a prize draw where you’ll have the chance to win 2 tickets to Tropical World and a £25 voucher to spend at Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre.
