Hate Crime

Hate crime is any crime that is targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards that person’s Disability; Race or ethnicity; Religion or belief; Sexual orientation; Transgender identity.

Anyone can report a hate crime or hate incident.

Hate incident reporting centres have been set up to help people living and working in Leeds who have been the victim of a hate incident. This scheme is operated in partnership with West Yorkshire police, Stop Hate UK and Leeds City Council. The centres are in a number of different locations around Leeds and are identified by the hate incident reporting centre signs. The majority are in neighbourhood housing offices, and one stop centres, but also within a range of community projects. All information given at a reporting centre is confidential and can be given anonymously.

Also included within the documents available to download/print off is a short 'One Minute Guide' explaining what a hate crime/incident is, why it should be reported and who it can be reported to. The guide includes a number of Frequently asked questions and a self-reporting form for those who want to submit a report to the council.

Hate Crime MARACs

This is a multi agency meeting chaired by Safer Leeds and includes partners from West Yorkshire Police, Stop Hate UK, Victim Support, social sandlords and other partners. There are 3 Hate Crime MARACs across the city who meet every 6 weeks. The meeting will look at hate crime referrals and identify/arrange support for victims, co-ordinate action against perpetrators and identify any neighbourhood work needed.
