Sir Henry Spencer Moore 1898 - 1986 was an English artist and sculptor. The son of a mining engineer, born in the Yorkshire town of Castleford, Moore became well known for his larger-scale abstract cast bronze and carved marble sculptures. Substantially supported by the British art establishment, Moore helped to introduce a particular form of modernism into the United Kingdom.
Moore had strong connections to Leeds. Being Yorkshire born and studying at Leeds Art College in 1919. Moore become the first student of sculpture as the college had set up a sculpture studio especially for him. At the college Moore met Barbra Hepworth, a friendship that would last for many years.
Leeds Art Gallery displays a number of important works by Moore and has worked closely with The Henry Moore Foundation to develop the sculpture collections of Leeds Museums and Galleries.
In recognition of this partnership, Leeds Art Gallery is linked by an adjoining bridge to the internationally important Henry Moore Institute, a centre dedicated to the study of sculpture. Please click here to visit The Henry Moore Foundation's website.
