The Victorian Tiled Hall

As part of the refurbishment work undertaken in early 2007, the original Victorian reading room was completely restored to expose its original features.

This includes:

  • The original parquet floor
  • Removing walls so that the room provides a 'walk through' link between the art gallery and central library buildings.
  • Marble Pillars
  • Original tiled walls
  • Restored medallion portraits of Homer, Shakespeare, Goethe, burns, Scott, Horace and Macaulay
  • Intricately tiled roof arches and gold ceiling bosses

The tiled hall was originally the main library reading room and is 80ft long by  40 ft wide. In the 1950s and 60s the room original features of the Tiled Hall were covered with shelving but now the beautiful features have been exposed to uncover this delightful space.

This wonderful room now houses the new Tiled hall cafe as well as the gift shop and book shop. With tall panel windows the room is often bathed in daylight and has a light and airy feel. Visit the cafe to enjoy a range of hot and cold refreshments with a Yorkshire theme or browse the gift shop to buy a mementoes or a special gift.
