Smiley SIDs - radar activated speed signs.
The road safety promotions unit have purchased Smiley Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) which are loaned out for use by local community groups where excess speed is identified as an issue.
The Smiley SIDs are radar activated and located at the roadside to display the speed of approaching vehicles. If the vehicle is travelling in excess of the speed limit then the display shows a frowning face alternated by the actual speed being driven at. If however the vehicle is travelling within the speed limit the sign displays a smiley face and alternates this with the actual speed being travelled at.
Members of local community groups (parish councils, tenants and residents associations) are provided with training in the setting up and use of this equipment and it is seen as a viable alternative particularly in areas where police enforcement of the speed limits is limited for any reason.
Additional resources to support this initiative and to further promote slower speeds are also provided in the form of signs for display on lampposts and wheelie bin stickers.
