Resident parking zones

Residents' parking zone sign

You can only park in a residents parking zone if your vehicle has a residents or visitors permit on display. If you park in a residents parking zone without displaying a valid parking permit you could get a penalty charge notice (PCN).

If you live in a residents parking zone, you can apply for a permit by downloading the application form, completing and sending it to Parking Services with the relevant documents. You can have a permit for each vehicle registered to your address. You can also have one visitor's permit for your address that allows your visitors to park within the zone. They must display the permit in their vehicle for the period of time they are visiting.

Please note:
You can only have one visitor's permit for your address which visitors to your house must display if they park their car outside.  If you plan to have more than one visitor at your property check the street index for the days and times the zone is in operation.

You can find more information about multiple visitors parking by downloading the multiple visitors guidelines.

If you have a blue badge (disabled persons parking badge) you cannot park in a residents parking zone unless you also have a valid residents permit for that zone. A residents parking permit does not give you permission to park in any restricted areas within the parking zone, for example on yellow lines.

Residents permit zones have different hours of restricted parking and these are usually displayed on signs located within the zone.

You can check the street index attached to this page to find out

  • if a particular street is part of a residents zone
  • what restricted hours for parking apply in a zone

Use of permit

You must put your permit in your nearside front windscreen so that a parking attendant can see all the details. You can only use it in the parking area shown on the permit and it does not mean that you will get a parking space. You must not use a permit after the expiry date. If you lose your permit you will be charged £10 for a replacement.

Please note:

  • You cannot transfer permits between zones
  • Permits remain our property and you must give them back if you move or if we ask you to.
  • If you misuse your permit we may take it from you.

Applying for a permit

Once you have checked your street is part of the zone you can make an application for a permit. Please download the permit application form and information sheet  opposite and follow the guidelines on what is required.

We will require proof of your address and we will accept a tenancy agreement, gas, electric or telephone bill (with name and address on), or a rent book.

We also need a document that has both the vehicle registration and your name and address. An example of this would be the vehicle registration document (log book) or the vehicle insurance document showing your name and address.

We prefer photocopies of these of these documents rather than originals.

If you have not heard anything about your application for a permit after 10 days please contact us.
