The Leeds Visitor Centre has been highlighted as one of the best in Yorkshire after being shortlisted for the prestigious White Rose Awards.
The centre located within Leeds Station which is managed by Leeds City Council has been nominated in the category of visitor information for the annual awards organised by Welcome to Yorkshire.
The winners of the awards which recognise Yorkshire’s best attractions, hotels, venues and individuals from the tourism industry will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Leeds on Monday 1 October at Elland Road’s Centenary Pavilion.
The award winners will be selected by a panel of judges led by Professor Colin Mellors (University of York Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Business and Community), along with Andrew Ford (The AA Area Manager and Senior Hotel & Restaurant Inspector), Brian Handley (General Manager of Harvey Nichols Leeds), food writer Elaine Lemm and Peter Charlton (Editor of The Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post).
The Leeds Visitor Centre welcomes approximately 500,000 people through its doors each year, offering a wide range of services including accommodation booking, travel and transport advice and tickets, details of local attractions, tickets for the theatre and major city events plus gifts, books and souvenirs.
Leeds City Council executive member for leisure and skills Councillor Adam Ogilvie said:
"Tourism is such an important part of our local economy, so it's good to know that our visitor services are being recognised. Leeds Visitor Centre is often the first point of contact for visitors arriving in the city and this nomination demonstrates the importance of ensuring that each and every visitor is able to make the most out of their visit. Congratulations to the staff at the centre, who provide a great service in spreading the word about our fantastic city and enabling visitors to buy tickets for a range of events.
“The award is also a reflection of the extensive cultural offer in terms of art, theatre, museums, music, parks, sport, restaurants and shopping in Leeds as well as the strong role the city is playing in major national events, including London 2012 Olympic Games.”
Aside from the accolade of being the best in Yorkshire, winners of the White Rose Awards will also be entered into the national Visit England Awards for Excellence next year.
Other Leeds nominees include Salvo’s in the best restaurant category, Malmaison in the best large hotel category and Northern Ballet in the arts and culture category.
Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire Gary Verity said:
"Making it to the shortlist is a huge achievement in itself and they have had to contend with some real quality competition. It's always a close run thing, but there's every chance they could go on and win one of these prestigious White Rose Awards."
