When someone close to you dies, various people and organisations need to be notified. You don't have to do everything straight away and there are lots of organisations who can offer help.
Registering deaths and
still births
You are legally required to register a death in the district where it happened. Unless the coroner is investigating the death, this needs to be done within five days. You can register a death at any Leeds register office, but you need to make an appointment first.
Dealing with bereavement
There are lots of local organisations in Leeds which offer support and bereavement counselling.
Coroners
Coroners are officers appointed by the council to investigate any sudden or unexplained death. The body will be held in the mortuary until the investigation is complete.
If someone dies abroad
If a relative or friend dies away from home, or away from the place where they want the funeral, burial or cremation to be held, you will need to make extra arrangements to move the body.
Funerals
The council maintains three crematoria and 22 cemeteries in Leeds.
Finances
There are various financial considerations to take into account when someone dies. Directgov offers a useful guide to help make sure you take care of everything you need to and know where to get financial support if you need it.
