An introduction to swimming lessons for children and adults.
Children’s lessons
Lessons following the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming are currently delivered at eight council leisure centres in Aireborough, Armley, John Smeaton, Kippax, Kirkstall, Rothwell, Scott Hall and Wetherby. All other council leisure centres follow the Dolphin Awards Scheme.
The lessons are divided into stages where children learn fundamental movement skills before having the opportunity to develop their skills in a specific aquatic discipline. At each stage there are a range of outcomes the child must achieve in order to progress to the next stage. An overview of these outcomes can be found in the ‘guide to swimming lessons’.
The assessment of children on the scheme is a continuous process, meaning they progress at their own pace rather than having to wait for an official assessment week. Badges and certificates are available to purchase from reception on the completion of each stage.
The Fundamental Sports Skills stages are the perfect progression for children that have successfully completed swimming lessons up to stage 7. Stages 8-10 also follow the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) and give children the chance to develop aquatics skills in diving, lifesaving, competitive swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and the silver and gold Challenge Awards. An over view can be downloaded in PDF format from the right of this page 'National plan stages 8-10'.
