Train for lifesaving
Train for lifesaving

Leeds City Council has a lifesaving co-ordinator who provides and controls lifesaving and lifeguarding courses in local leisure centres for the community. Lifesaving builds responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills and courses are available for anyone from 12 years to 99 years!

The courses include:

Lifesupport 1, 2 and 3
Includes training in the following areas: CPR, rescue breathing, choking, shock, hypothermia and drowning.
Pre Requisites: none

Bronze medallion
Recognised as the flagship award for lifesaving the medallion is designed to establish competent levels of knowledge on water safety combined with practical ability to effect a rescue in a variety of simulated open water conditions.
Pre requisites: Age 13. swim ability: 400 metres (Life Support 1 - included in this course)

Award of merit
This award is an extension of the Bronze Medallion, obtaining proficient levels of knowledge and practical ability covering further simulated open water rescue situations.
Pre requisites: Age 15 & Bronze medallion (Life Support 2 - included in this course)

Distinction
The highest practical award of the RLSS requires excellent levels of knowledge and practical ability in a variety of rescue skills.
Prerequisites: RLSS Open Water Silver Cross, age 16+ & RLSS Award of Merit. (Life Support 3 - included in this course)

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
This is a nationally recognised qualification and is an essential requirement for all Leeds City Council lifeguards. Skills taught are lifeguard principles, water rescue, spinal injury management, life support and first aid. All courses include resources and assessment fees.
Pre requisites: Age 16+. swim ability: 200 metres on the front and back using recognised strokes, 50 metres within 1 minute and able to comfortably perform a surface dive.

National Rescue Award for swimming teachers and coaches
This course is designed to equip teachers with adequate skills to minimise risk and to respond effectively to an emergency and should be required for anyone teaching and coaching programmed swimming activities.
Pre requisites: Age 16+. swim ability: 20 metres on front and back, using recognised strokes and able to perform a surface dive.

Rookie
A programme for young people up to the age of thirteen. Skills taught include water safety, resuscitation and first aid. This scheme teaches self rescue skills and lifesaving rescue skills that will enable participants to respond effectively and safely in an emergency situation.

Community lifesaving initiatives
Awareness programmes offering education in basic life support, first aid, treating medical conditions and water safety. Courses are available to all community groups and can be tailored to meet the needs of your group.

Activate programmes (Schools) Water Safety
Unit 1 - To introduce and promote water safety awareness and provide education, to assist pupils to fulfil the water safety elements of the National Curriculum - Swimming. Recommended for Key Stage 2.

Emergency Response Unit 2 - To introduce and promote basic life support (resuscitation) and first aid. Recommended for key stage 2, 3 and 4.  Courses and workshops available and will be tailored to meet the needs of each school.

Lifeguard Trainer Assessor courses
Qualification to enable you to become a qualified pool lifeguard trainer assessor. Essential for training and assessing the National Pool Lifeguard qualification, foundation module.
Pre requisites: RLSS/IQL National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, RLSS membership.
