Leeds City Council’s swimming training scheme is a natural progression for 6 to 10 year olds from the council's learn to swim programme (swimming lessons). The scheme was set up in 1973 and is one of the largest in the country with approximately 600 in the scheme at any one time.
Swimmers enter the scheme at entry level in one of ten entry (E) groups around the city. At this level the emphasis is on technique and skill development. Swimmers can then progress through the scheme based on their swimming ability.
At the top level of the Scheme, swimmers are of national and even international standard. The training scheme is run by two full time coaches and approximately thirty part-time coaches, all coaches are ASA qualified.
