Types of rugby

  • Tag rugby is a non-contact version of rugby league often played in primary schools and by young children. The game sees each player wear a belt with two Velcro tags attached to it. Rather than tackling each other, players attempts to prevent the opposition from scoring by ‘tagging’ (pulling off the tag) the payer with the ball.
  • Rugby league is a contact sport played by two teams of 13-players on an outdoor pitch. Many independent clubs and teams are run in Leeds for both males and females.
  • Touch rugby is a fast moving minimal contact game that can be played by mixed teams of any ability level. Leagues are made up of organised teams with additional teams organised on the night for drop-in players.

Performance rugby

The performance programmes for under 13 and under 18 male players is run by the Leeds Rugby League Service Area and the rugby league development officer.

Players are identified from community clubs, school and colleges and entry is by invitation onto a performance programme based at John Charles centre for sport.

Elite training takes place over a three month period with the possibility for players and coaching staff to be directed on the pathway to the Leeds based professional clubs, Leeds Rhinos and Hunslet Hawks, or regional and national squads organised by the Rugby Football League.

The success of the Leeds programme can be gauged by the number of players who come through the system, currently there are 28 super league players who have been directly involved with the Leeds Service Area.

If community clubs, schools and colleges have suitable players or coaching staff they can contact the development officer who will allocate a service area coach to view the players and give a formal assessment.
