The city boasts two outdoor 400m synthetic eight lane tracks, based at John Charles Centre for Sport (South Leeds Stadium) and Leeds Metropolitan University (Carnegie Campus). Both offer full jumping and throwing facilities and are in receipt of a UKA Track Certificate for training and competition disciplines. John Charles Centre for Sport (South Leeds Stadium) also offers an indoor 75m synthetic six lane track with jumping and throwing facilities and an outdoor long throws area for shot, discus and hammer.

As well as boasting international standard facilities, Leeds is also renowned for its wealth of Athletic Clubs catering for Track & Field, Road Running, Fell Running and Cross Country. Highlights of the city’s extensive athletic development programme are listed overleaf.

Developing Schools
The Leeds City Council’s Primary Schools Athletics Challenge is acknowledged to be the largest of its’ kind in the UK. Now involving over 130 primary schools and almost 3,000 children (aged between 8 and 11), this annual challenge grows with each year that passes thanks to the excellent links with School Sports Partnerships and School

Sport Coordinators
The High Schools Indoor Athletics Championships continue to be developed in conjunction with Leeds Schools Athletic Association. Nearly 1000 young athletes from approximately, 18 schools regularly compete, with students from local Sports Colleges acting as officials. This event is now an annual event on the Leeds Athletics calendar.

Developing Clubs
Young people aged between 8 and 11 can attend the weekly Community Club at John Charles Centre for Sport (South Leeds Stadium). The Club provides a direct link for the children to Leeds City Athletic Club (who are also based at the venue), offering a variety of athletic disciplines in a non-competitive environment. Similar community clubs operate at schools and leisure centres across the city.

The Sport Development Unit support a number of track and field clubs throughout Leeds. Catering for all ages and disciplines, the clubs are working towards Club Mark Accreditation, a scheme established by Sport England and England Athletics to recognise those clubs that provide safe, effective and child friendly training conditions.

Developing Coaches
A team of three Community Athletics Coaches work across the city delivering school coaching programmes, after school athletics clubs and holiday scheme sessions. Athletics Coaching and Officiating courses are available throughout the year. For further information please contact www.ukathletics.net or www.westyorkshiresport.co.uk

Developing Disability Sport
After being given £2000 for specialist equipment, Leeds was the first city council to pilot the IFTA disability scheme within 12 Special and Resourced Schools. The pilot project worked with a wide range of individuals, from those who had hearing impairments and physical disabilities to those with severe learning disabilities. Pupils from the 12 chosen schools continued to develop their athletics skills by attending specialist sessions at John Charles Centre for Sport (South Leeds Stadium), organised by Leeds City Athletic Club.

Leeds City Athletic Club also provides coaching for athletes with a learning disability on a Tuesday evening, as well as a specific session for wheelchair athletes on a Thursday evening.
